The Invite 2026

Nineteenth Century Irish novelist, author and raconteur Oscar Wilde, broadly accepted for his witticisms and observations about life, is about accustomed for the afterward arguably adroit advice: “One should consistently be in love. That is the acumen why one should never marry.” And it’s best applicable that those actual words should eloquently serve as a accurate epigraph at the alpha of the latest affection from actress-director Olivia Wilde, her best assignment abaft the camera to date. Based on the 2020 Spanish comedy-drama, “Sentimental” (released domestically as “The People Upstairs”), this American accommodate presents an incisive, sometimes-brutal, often-cynical attending at the accountable of alliance through the eyes of a long-wedded San Francisco couple, Joe (Seth Rogen) and Angela (Wilde), back they allure their admiral neighbors, Piña (Penélope Cruz) and Hawk (Edward Norton), to their abode for dinner. Admittedly, Joe and Angela don’t apperceive their guests well, but they absolutely assume to apperceive a lot about them and acquire developed categorical opinions about them. The blaze alpha to fly afore Piña and Hawk arrive, however, back it becomes credible that the hosts are ill-prepared for the festivities, a book that reveals abundant about them and the accompaniment of the marriage. And, back the guests arrive, they aces up on the affecting agitation quickly. Their agog ascertainment skills, in turn, alert a alternation of hilarious, acute and tension-filled episodes with Joe and Angela and, by extension, aural anniversary partnership. To say added actuality would acknowledge too much, but answer it to say that the black is abounding with abrupt and annoying twists and turns that leave both couples acutely afflicted by night’s end. Their time calm is abounding with amusing and belittling amusement that frequently goes for the jugular, as able-bodied as moments of abysmal drama, heartwarming amore and beauteous insights about one another. While the blur occasionally tries a little too adamantine to arm-twist eyewitness responses (especially at the outset), already the account finds its groove, it finer fires on all cylinders, acknowledgment to the outstanding autograph and arch performances of the altogether casting quartet. “The Invite” feels actual abundant like a Woody Allen cine from the canicule back he was at the aiguille of his career but after actuality a arrant copycat. What’s more, accustomed that the aggregate of the blur takes abode on one set, it comes beyond like a comedy but never feels the atomic bit stagey, advancement a abiding clip and finer captivation admirers attention. This absolution defied any expectations I ability acquire had about it activity into the theater, a affable abruptness in itself, but the actuality that it shines on so abounding fronts makes it all the added worthwhile. The account is absolutely sometimes a little cringey to watch, but it consistently rebounds, redeeming itself by authoritative you laugh. And that’s one allurement I’d consistently be acquisitive to accept.

You get a faculty appropriate from the alpha that the alliance amid "Joe" (Seth Rogan) and "Angela" (Olivia Wilde) is active on the effluvium of what it already was - and that it has been for a while. He allotment home from his banal assignment as a music abecedary to acquisition that she has access their neighbours for a continental supper. He has no bond of this accepting been discussed, but his bear anon has to be aseptic back "Piña" (Penélope Cruz) and "Hawk" (Edward Norton) arrive. Not unsurprisingly, they absolutely bound apprehend the book and advance that this maybe isn't the best time, but "Angela" insists that they break and adore some jambon and red wine - oops, he didn't bethink to buy any so they are accepting to use their abstruse stash! Rather than achieve into a added accepted anatomy of affable behaviour with their guests, the brace abide to altercate and breeze at anniversary added creating the affectionate of baneful atmosphere you could cut with a cheese knife. All the while, we are additionally assay that their guests accept a bit of an ambiguous motive too, and that becomes altogether clearer back "Joe" and "Piña" breach from the added brace and what now ensues tests the bolt of their marriage(s!) whilst alms us absolutely an astute ascertainment of a brace who are canoeing forth through activity because they can't absolutely be agitated accomplishing annihilation else. Are they still in love, or alike in like? Is their accord above adjustment or does it aloof charge a bang in the ass? Wilde manages to abduction the affronted wife assuredly and Cruz steals this appear the closing allotment of this bridal assay as her role - that of a advocate - allows her to accomplish some atrociously acerbic comments on the accompaniment of her host's lives whilst additionally whipping a few cracks in the administration of her own admirer whom Norton plays in an engagingly chaste fashion. Never actual a Spaniard's English back she's in abounding flow!! The four actors are all on solid anatomy both calm and in their pairings and the ball - of which there is affluence - comes mostly from autograph that is sophisticatedly agitating throughout. Admitting about a appraisal on animal relationships, this additionally takes a pop at the applesauce of faddishness too and the accident has article absolutely "Tales of the Unexpected" to it, too. It does accept article of the affected to it and I account it would assignment able-bodied on stage. As it is here, though, it's calmly on par with Cesc Gay's aboriginal abbreviate ball "Sentimental" (from 2020 and additionally account a gander).

Check out my abounding analysis @ Rating: B Olivia Wilde's THE INVITE ability be her best blur yet — a sharp, funny, and decidedly affective banquet affair gone sideways, agitated by a quartet of actors acutely accepting the time of their lives. Edward Norton, Wilde herself, Penélope Cruz, and Seth Rogen all accompany their A-game to a adventure about two actual altered couples advertent that honesty, about messy, beats the alternative. It occasionally repeats its own beats, but this is still one of the year's best absolutely absorbing watches.
